Are Braces Safe for Pregnant Women?

If you are pregnant, or planning to get pregnant in the future, you have probably already heard of all the things you should or should not be doing. One common misconception is that pregnant women should not be going for orthodontic treatment. However, with proper care and consideration, braces and/or Invisalign treatment can be safe for pregnant women.

Communicate with your Orthodontist

If you are pregnant, you will want to share this information with your Surrey orthodontist. One important reason is that orthodontic treatment often includes the need for x-rays of your mouth and jaw area. While these x-rays are typically safe, it is best to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation during pregnancy. For this reason, x-rays will be delayed until after the baby is born. In some cases, this may mean that it could be best to delay treatment completely until after the baby is born.

Furthermore, letting your orthodontist know you are pregnant will allow your orthodontist to take extra care in making sure the teeth are moving as they should be. Hormones during pregnancy can cause many changes in a woman’s body, and tooth movement and oral health can be affected by this. This might mean more frequent adjustments are needed, but should not pose any risk to the mother or baby.

Monitor Your Dental Hygiene

Even if you do not have braces or Invisalign, it is important to keep a close eye on your dental hygiene throughout your pregnancy. Although not common, some women do suffer from increased inflammation in their mouths, which could lead to gingivitis. Having braces may make it more difficult to properly clean and floss, so emphasis should be placed on keeping up with oral health and hygiene.

If you have braces and have become or are considering becoming pregnant, rest assured that braces are safe for pregnant women. Make sure that you communicate with your Surrey orthodontist, or contact Maduke Bulat for your orthodontic treatment.
