Braces vs. Invisalign: Which One is Right for My Child?

Braces vs. Invisalign: Which One is Right for My Child?

As “invisible trays” become an increasingly common way to solve a variety of teeth alignment problems, many parents are curious if it is right for their children. First and foremost, it is important to know that Invisalign and braces are not always interchangeable.

It often takes a thorough examination of your child’s needs to determine which of the two will be the most effective in the journey to a healthier smile.

When is Invisalign Treatment Most Suitable?

Invisalign has become popularized for its convenience and subtlety. The thin material used in Invisalign trays makes them much less noticeable than traditional braces. Not only this, but the trays are also easily removable. This makes it much easier to clean the appliance and teeth during treatment.

Invisalign trays can also be removed when eating. This means children do not have to adapt their diet as obviously as when undergoing treatment through orthodontic braces.

However, there are limitations to what Invisalign can accomplish. Patients need to be strict about keeping them on almost 24 hours a day. They should only remove them for short periods to eat and to clean their teeth and trays. And because the Invisalign are removable, it’s easier for them to get lost—which requires replacement.

When are Orthodontic Braces Most Suitable?

Traditional orthodontic braces are still the standard option for treating children. They are the standard of care for treating severe cases. This is because they provide more consistent pressure on the jaw and teeth than Invisalign does.

Be warned that traditional braces require more upkeep and care from the patient. This includes a strict routine of cleaning and a limitation of certain foods that can stain the surrounding tooth or damage the brackets. However, we find that braces continue to lead to great outcomes for the treatment of all patients, especially children. Since braces are not removed during the day, patient compliance is not an issue. Traditional braces and Invisalign are both excellent treatment options: they are just different.

Finally, children who have severe cases of dental misalignment, or skeletal issues where the teeth are impacted by the misalignment of the jaw, will most likely require traditional braces.

Which is Right for Your Child?

Parents should be aware of the fundamental differences between braces and Invisalign. However, it requires a detailed consultation to make an accurate assessment. That is when we can determine the needs of your child and form a successful plan towards a healthy smile.
