Dental Grills – A Concerning Teenage Trend

If you are in the throws of your orthodontic treatment in Surrey, it is unlikely you are looking to add a dental grill to your -already- fully “fenced off” smile.

However, there is a growing trend due to pop culture icons, which parents might want to become aware of.

A “dental grill” is a cosmetic piece you wear in your mouth, sometimes containing jewels, and are made with silver or gold overlays. They were developed as far back as the 1980’s by hip-hop culture, and donned by many rappers today.

Also known as “fronts”, these removable oral accessories fit over the front teeth. This hop-hop inspired, toothsome accessory, holds a tiny price tag as low as $20. But these bejeweled grills can increase substantially from $20 anywhere into the thousands; the more elaborate the grill one desires.

The concern is the oral health problems they create. This $20 “accessory” can lead to thousands of dollars worth of dental work, when plaque buildup remains unattended to. Plaque can easily develop on the grill and can cause irritation to the gingival margin. In addition, gingivitis can develop, which in turn can cause tooth decay.

As your orthodontic specialist, we understand that grills can also cause abrasion to adjoining teeth, gum recession, tooth discoloration or chipped teeth. Not a pleasant sight for any concerned dental professional, or parent for that matter.

Many schools have banned grills due to the culture it represents, the inability for proper speech, and health related reasons.

Although a dental professional can create a properly affixed grill, as concerned orthodontists who wish to see a healthy white smile, we advise that your best accessory is just that. A healthy, white (grill’less) smile!
