Does The New Canadian Dental Care Plan Cover Any Orthodontic Procedures?

Does The New Canadian Dental Care Plan Cover Any Orthodontic Procedures

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was first announced in 2024, and two years later, it is ready to roll out across Canada.

To be eligible for the CDCP, you must be currently uninsured and have a household income under $90,000. Applications will open to eligible seniors aged 87 and older and slowly begin to roll out to other age brackets. The federal government estimates about nine million Canadians will be eligible for CDCP.

In terms of orthodontics, the official Canadian website states, “Some orthodontic services will be added to the CDCP starting in 2025. Orthodontic services will only be covered in cases of medical need based on stringent criteria and will include a maximum spending limit.”

So, as of right now, it appears that the CDCP will not cover orthodontics, but that does not mean it won’t be beneficial for you.

What Does the CDCP Cover?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers essential services to maintain oral health and treat conditions, such as cleanings, exams, x-rays, fillings, root canals, and extractions.

These services are contingent on recommendations by dental professionals and may require preauthorization.

Moving forward, we believe there will be more coverage for orthodontic procedures. Patients seeking orthodontic treatments should check with their provider and the official plan to understand potential eligibility and to determine what costs might be covered and what may incur out-of-pocket expenses.
