Signs You May Have a Bad Bite

A misaligned or “bad bite” can be both uncomfortable and lead to problems down the line if it is not dealt with. Here are several signs that you can look for that may indicate that you have a bad bite and should make an appointment with your orthodontist to get it evaluated in case treatment is necessary.

What is a Good Bite?

If you have a “Good Bite” you should be able to close your teeth together completely, feel your top and bottom teeth coming together at the same time and it should feel comfortable and painless. Variations in these feelings can indicate problems with your bite.

Your bite shouldn’t be painful and if you experience pain in your jawbone or jaw muscles this may indicate that you have a jaw misalignment that is causing you difficulties. A misaligned bite can lead to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and an increase in pain throughout your head if it is not addressed.

You may also experience tenderness on one side or on a specific tooth if one or more teeth have become misaligned and have impacted your bite.

Your teeth may be uneven if you feel some top teeth contact the bottom row of teeth before others, or if one side of your bite feels notably higher than the other.

Tongue Sores and Infections

Another sign of a misaligned or bad bite can be your teeth causing unintentional damage to your tongue when talking or chewing. This often involves the back teeth slicing and abrading the soft tissue of the tongue leading to cuts and sores that can become infected.

Even a previously good bite can change or deteriorate due to erosion of tooth surfaces leading to misalignment, so if something feels unusual or amiss contact your orthodontist.
