The Best Way to Floss with Braces

Flossing becomes much more difficult with metal braces. However, it cannot be skipped, as it is extremely important to keep your teeth clean while wearing braces. Ineffective flossing will lead to plaque, bad breath, and cavities. In this article, we will share the best way to floss with braces so that your teeth stay clean.

The Best Way to Floss with Braces

For people who have just started wearing metal braces, flossing can seem quite tricky. There is the added challenge of getting around the wires and metal in their mouth. Because of this, dental floss is strongly recommended for those with braces. Here is a three-step overview of how to effectively floss while wearing metal braces.

Step 1: Grab your dental floss and thread it behind the archwire. You may need to move your tongue or lips to find an opening where you can get the floss through.

Step 2: Gently work the floss between both teeth and up to the gums. Ensure that you are flossing closely between every tooth and getting plaque buildup or food bits on the wires.

Step 3: Unthread the strand of floss from behind the archwire and repeat steps one and two for each tooth.

Once you have flossed between each tooth and cleaned the plaque buildup from the wires, you are finished flossing. It is suggested that you floss at least twice a day, and it is encouraged that you floss after each meal. This is a great routine for kids with braces and is also suitable for adults.

One of the best ways to avoid flossing challenges with metal braces is to opt for a clear aligner. Invisalign for example, can be easily removed. This makes it much easier to floss and brush teeth. Every case is different, and your orthodontist can advise you on the best orthodontic treatment and solution for your particular case.

We use x-rays, photos, and digital scans to assess each patient before beginning treatment. From there, we create an effective treatment plan and use orthodontic equipment, such as aligners, to remedy the problem. Contact us today to learn more.
