What Kinds of Misalignments Can Braces Fix?

There are lots of different types of tooth misalignments, and braces can fix most of them either by themselves or with the help of other specialists who are sometimes called in. In our blog today, we’re going to talk about some of the really common misalignments.

An overbite occurs when the top teeth are forward of the bottom teeth and don’t align. This may be noticeable in front, but in the back, chewing surfaces of the molars may not align either. Overbites can be an aesthetic problem, a functional problem or both.

An underbite is the opposite of an overbite. The lower teeth are forward of the top teeth, and they don’t align. Chewing surfaces of back teeth may not meet properly either. Underbites can be an aesthetic problem, a functional problem or both.

In this situation the teeth don’t line up diagonally. Similar to the above, it can be an aesthetic problem, a functional problem or both.

In this situation, the teeth may look very misaligned as they are crowded together, and this can cause a functional problem as well. Overcrowding can create problems when new teeth come in.

Too much spacing

This is the opposite of overcrowding when there is too much space between certain teeth. The problem may be cosmetic or functional or both.

Other Issues

Then there is a variety of other potential issues. A speech impediment can sometimes be cured with better teeth alignment. Sometimes just one or two teeth are out of line. Sometimes just the front teeth are misaligned from excessive thumb-sucking or pacifier habits.
