What To Expect When Getting Braces

What To Expect When Getting Braces

Contrary to popular belief, getting braces does not need to be a big adjustment. With a little bit of preparation and research, wearing braces will be a smooth transition. There are some changes to be aware of, but braces are worth the inconvenience.

Does Wearing Braces Hurt?

When people think of braces, the first thought that comes to mind is pain. Braces put constant pressure on teeth and the jawline to position them back into place. As a result, there will be some discomfort if you wear any kind of braces.

Invisalign is also hard to detect and easily removed, which makes flossing and brushing easier. These are  obvious advantages, but Invisalign braces still take some getting used to, and they have to be worn at least 22 hours per day.

It Will be Challenging to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene With Traditional Braces

Wearing metal braces will impact a dental care routine. Flossing and brushing will be more challenging. However, they are as critical as ever, as gum disease, plaque buildup, and cavities still occur.

A soft toothbrush is recommended for people wearing Invisalign or metal braces. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride for best results. It is also important to keep the teeth and gums healthy by brushing after each meal.

A tongue scraper can easily remove hard to reach food particles and bacteria from the tongue and gums. Leftover food particles will cause problems such as halitosis (bad breath) and gum disease.

When Should I Expect Results?

Traditional braces are typically worn for about 18 months and require constant attention and care to achieve desired results. With Invisalign, you can expect to see some results in as little as ten weeks. However, not every patient is a candidate for Invisalign, and only an orthodontist can tell you what is the best orthodontic solution for you.
