When is Jaw Surgery Required to Fix Misaligned Teeth?

When is jaw surgery required to fix misaligned teeth?

When teeth are misaligned most people immediately start thinking about braces and retainers. Crooked teeth are usually the result of teeth in the wrong positions, such as overbites, crossbites and underbites, and they can be treated with common orthodontic procedures.

In some situations, the misaligned teeth are the result of the upper and lower jaw being misaligned. The result is the same – crooked teeth – but the treatment is different. When the jaws are not lined up properly, jaw surgery may be the best solution.

Misaligned jaws can cause far worse issues than crooked teeth. For some people, a misaligned jaw can cause headaches, jaw pain, sleeping problems, speaking problems, and uneven wear on the teeth. This is when orthognathic surgery is recommended.

Orthognathic surgery is a corrective jaw surgery that straightens or realigns the jaw. This type of surgery is done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Your orthodontist and surgeon work together to plan out the best course of treatment.  Braces  will be used before the surgery to straighten the teeth. This is done to determine how much of the problem is the result of the jaw being misaligned and how much is the teeth. The orthodontist uses braces to align the teeth before surgery and then the oral surgeon can properly place the jaw.

The surgeon installs metal screws and small plates during surgery to provide guides for the jaw to heal and strengthen in the proper positioning. They then use the existing braces to keep the jaw in place while they are healing.

After surgery, the braces stay until the jaw is completely healed. Once everything is in the correct place and the surgeon and orthodontist have determined that teeth and jaw are ready, the braces are removed and the patient wears a retainer.
